I had a wonderful experience studying in Professor Timothy P. Williams’ class. His engaging teaching style and the individualized support he provided on my paper and project helped me discover my passion for working with children.

The guidance he offered—both during class and beyond—played a key role in shaping my interests and gave me the confidence to turn that passion into practice. His mentorship directly influenced my decision to pursue my current role working with children, and for that, I’m truly grateful.

One of the most valuable takeaways from my time in the program was learning how to approach individuals and communities through a strengths-based perspective. This perspective has been essential in building trust and meaningful connections with the children and families I work with at my current job.

Additionally, the emphasis on reflective practice, cultural humility, and ethical decision-making has helped me navigate complex situations with greater confidence and compassion. The coursework, combined with real-world field placements, gave me practical tools that I continue to use daily, whether it’s in advocacy or collaborating with interdisciplinary teams.

Most importantly, the support and mentorship I received from faculty and staff members helped me see how my personal interests and values could be integrated into my professional work, which has made my career both fulfilling and purpose-driven.

The most rewarding part of my current role is building meaningful, therapeutic relationships with clients and their families and supporting them through their emotional and mental health journey. I find deep fulfillment in helping individuals feel heard, validated, and empowered to make positive changes in their lives.

It’s also incredibly meaningful to witness progress, whether it’s a small breakthrough in a session or long-term growth over time. Every day, I’m reminded of the importance of compassion, active listening, and meeting people where they are. Knowing that I can make a tangible difference in someone's life is what makes this current job so impactful for the people I serve.

As you step into your first job after earning your MSW, remember that you’re not expected to know everything. Stay curious, ask questions, and embrace every opportunity to learn. Set clear boundaries with your time and emotional energy from the start to protect yourself from burnout. Use supervision intentionally; come prepared with questions or cases and view it as a space for growth, not judgment. Most importantly, give yourself grace. You’ll make mistakes, and that’s okay. What matters most is that you reflect, learn, and keep growing. Just know that we are all constantly learning in this field.
